During the second week in February, we received multiple calls for the smell of Natural Gas. After investigation of each call and not detecting any Natural Gas leaks at these locations, we have found that the YZ odorization unit that injects mercaptan into our system went into a default setting injecting too much mercaptan into our system at the Tap Station on HWY 56. The YZ odorization unit had put too much Mercaptan, also known as methanethiol, which is the additive that is added to natural gas to make it easier to detect in case of a leak, in the Natural Gas, since Natural Gas is colorless and odorless. Mercaptan is used in many industries, including as an additive in jet fuel, pharmaceuticals, and livestock feed. They are used in many chemical plants and are less corrosive and less toxic than similar sulfur compounds found naturally in rotten eggs, onions, garlic, skunks, and other foul smells. Mercaptan is found naturally in living organisms, including the human body where it is a waste product of metabolism. The YZ odorization unit has been resolved and is now working properly.
